a few words about you\r\nand embarrass you and Joela a little bit.\r\n\r\n4\r\n00:00:16,683 --> 00:00:19,753\r\nThat's always the mayor’s \r\n\r\n5\r\n00:00:19,753 --> 00:00:22,956\r\nprivilege on these exciting days.\r\n\r\n6\r\n00:00:23,623 --> 00:00:26,359\r\nA few things.\r\n\r\n7\r\n00:00:26,359 --> 00:00:28,061\r\nWe all know why we're here.\r\n\r\n8\r\n00:00:28,061 --> 00:00:31,464\r\nTo celebrate the close,\r\n\r\n9\r\n00:00:32,098 --> 00:00:34,768\r\nit was a 5-4 vote for your confirmation.\r\n\r\n10\r\n00:00:34,768 --> 00:00:37,604\r\n No, it was unanimous.\r\n\r\n11\r\n00:00:37,604 --> 00:00:42,976\r\nAs director of the city budget office\r\nduring a critical time.\r\n\r\n12\r\n00:00:42,976 --> 00:00:45,945\r\nNot just for our city,\r\nbut I think in our country.\r\n\r\n13\r\n00:00:46,046 --> 00:00:49,816\r\nI want to thank all of you\r\nfor taking time out of your busy schedules\r\n\r\n14\r\n00:00:50,250 --> 00:00:51,151\r\nto celebrate.\r\n\r\n15\r\n00:00:51,151 --> 00:00:54,154\r\nYou know, I always say repeatedly,\r\n\r\n16\r\n00:00:54,254 --> 00:00:57,257\r\nyou got to find things to celebrate\r\nalmost every single day in life.\r\n\r\n17\r\n00:00:57,590 --> 00:01:00,226\r\nAnd clearly, this is one of them.\r\n\r\n18\r\n00:01:01,227 --> 00:01:05,031\r\nJoela, thank you for, being with him.\r\n\r\n19\r\n00:01:05,532 --> 00:01:09,235\r\nProbably leading him,\r\nthrough very tough times that we have.\r\n\r\n20\r\n00:01:09,302 --> 00:01:12,072\r\nAnd so I'll talk a little bit about that.\r\n\r\n21\r\n00:01:12,072 --> 00:01:15,608\r\nFor those that don't know,\r\nwhat our budget office does.\r\n\r\n22\r\n00:01:18,044 --> 00:01:20,980\r\nI don't know all what they do, by the way.\r\n\r\n23\r\n00:01:22,515 --> 00:01:24,451\r\nMy jokes are a little flat\r\nthis morning.\r\n\r\n24\r\n00:01:25,285 --> 00:01:27,220\r\nThis is funny stuff I'm throwing out here.\r\n\r\n25\r\n00:01:27,220 --> 00:01:30,223\r\nI got to broaden my laughter here a little bit.\r\n\r\n26\r\n00:01:31,958 --> 00:01:35,095\r\nThey balance our books and develop options for the mayor\r\n\r\n27\r\n00:01:35,095 --> 00:01:38,898\r\nand the city council to consider\r\nwhen we are looking at the quality\r\n\r\n28\r\n00:01:38,898 --> 00:01:42,635\r\nof services that people expect\r\nand indeed they deserve in our city.\r\n\r\n29\r\n00:01:44,404 --> 00:01:47,407\r\nI think as departments go,\r\n\r\n30\r\n00:01:47,507 --> 00:01:50,110\r\nthey're sort of the,\r\nI would say the brain center,\r\n\r\n31\r\n00:01:50,110 --> 00:01:53,346\r\nthe nerve center, and what we could do,\r\nwe always want more resources.\r\n\r\n32\r\n00:01:53,346 --> 00:01:57,584\r\nAnd you and I, it come into the \r\nstate around the same time in 2008,\r\n\r\n33\r\n00:01:57,884 --> 00:02:00,620\r\nand I don't recall a time\r\nwhere every department\r\n\r\n34\r\n00:02:00,620 --> 00:02:03,656\r\nand every constituent said\r\nmore, more, more.\r\n\r\n35\r\n00:02:03,857 --> 00:02:06,693\r\nAnd we understand that, Seattle is a very\r\ndemanding city and rightfully so.\r\n\r\n36\r\n00:02:06,693 --> 00:02:08,561\r\nWe're a phenomenal city.\r\n\r\n37\r\n00:02:08,561 --> 00:02:12,398\r\nSo your office looks at\r\nhow we can sort of navigate\r\n\r\n38\r\n00:02:12,398 --> 00:02:17,003\r\nthrough all of these challenges\r\nand indeed in an area where in a time\r\n\r\n39\r\n00:02:17,003 --> 00:02:21,474\r\nwhere cuts in front of funding,\r\nthey're targeting vital programs\r\n\r\n40\r\n00:02:21,474 --> 00:02:26,513\r\nto, to our services that meet in clearly\r\nmany of our most vulnerable neighbors.\r\n\r\n41\r\n00:02:27,013 --> 00:02:29,516\r\nYour work and the work of your colleagues\r\nhere.\r\n\r\n42\r\n00:02:29,516 --> 00:02:31,117\r\nAnd I see many of the CBO here.\r\n\r\n43\r\n00:02:31,117 --> 00:02:33,219\r\nI'm very happy that you are here.\r\n\r\n44\r\n00:02:33,219 --> 00:02:35,355\r\nYour work becomes incredibly important.\r\n\r\n45\r\n00:02:35,355 --> 00:02:38,992\r\nI think more so now than ever before,\r\nat least in my professional life.\r\n\r\n46\r\n00:02:39,926 --> 00:02:42,195\r\nSo, thank you.\r\n\r\n47\r\n00:02:42,195 --> 00:02:43,496\r\nI am not talking to you, Dan,\r\n\r\n48\r\n00:02:43,496 --> 00:02:46,499\r\ntalking about all the people\r\nthat have come here to support you.\r\n\r\n49\r\n00:02:46,566 --> 00:02:49,102\r\nI've learned, many years ago that\r\n\r\n50\r\n00:02:50,570 --> 00:02:53,206\r\nsuccess is not a\r\n\r\n51\r\n00:02:53,206 --> 00:02:55,008\r\none person's journey.\r\n\r\n52\r\n00:02:55,008 --> 00:02:58,011\r\nYou can't have success without a team,\r\n\r\n53\r\n00:02:58,011 --> 00:03:00,313\r\nand you have a very successful team\r\n\r\n54\r\n00:03:00,313 --> 00:03:03,149\r\ndoing outstanding work.\r\n\r\n55\r\n00:03:03,149 --> 00:03:06,119\r\nYou know, I,\r\n\r\n56\r\n00:03:06,119 --> 00:03:07,720\r\nwhen I'm around people, I always say\r\n\r\n57\r\n00:03:07,720 --> 00:03:10,723\r\ntry to lead with integrity.\r\n\r\n58\r\n00:03:10,757 --> 00:03:11,925\r\nLead with your values.\r\n\r\n59\r\n00:03:11,925 --> 00:03:13,459\r\nLead with who you are.\r\n\r\n60\r\n00:03:13,459 --> 00:03:16,563\r\nAnd I'm very pleased\r\nwith the level of competency\r\n\r\n61\r\n00:03:16,996 --> 00:03:19,966\r\nand the level of integrity\r\ncoming out of your office.\r\n\r\n62\r\n00:03:19,966 --> 00:03:22,702\r\nThese are tough jobs we have, we sign up for.\r\n\r\n63\r\n00:03:22,702 --> 00:03:25,138\r\nWe did, it was a blue pill and a red pill.\r\n\r\n64\r\n00:03:25,138 --> 00:03:27,106\r\nI don't know what pills in the matrix.\r\n\r\n65\r\n00:03:27,106 --> 00:03:29,809\r\nThis was the pill you took.\r\n\r\n66\r\n00:03:29,809 --> 00:03:33,146\r\nBut the pill we all took\r\nis to serve this public and servant with\r\n\r\n67\r\n00:03:34,280 --> 00:03:37,850\r\nintegrity and a commitment\r\nto a people outside of ourselves.\r\n\r\n68\r\n00:03:37,850 --> 00:03:40,186\r\nSo thank you, Dan.\r\nA little bit about Dan's background.\r\n\r\n69\r\n00:03:40,186 --> 00:03:41,654\r\nHe went to Swarthmore College.\r\n\r\n70\r\n00:03:41,654 --> 00:03:44,490\r\nMany of you know, that's\r\none of the top liberals\r\n\r\n71\r\n00:03:44,490 --> 00:03:47,493\r\narts colleges in the country,\r\nat least in Philadelphia.\r\n\r\n72\r\n00:03:48,595 --> 00:03:50,730\r\nFull, full, full honesty here.\r\n\r\n73\r\n00:03:50,730 --> 00:03:52,765\r\nI didn't know what, who\r\n\r\n74\r\n00:03:52,765 --> 00:03:56,402\r\nor what Swarthmore was\r\nuntil my son started looking at colleges.\r\n\r\n75\r\n00:03:56,869 --> 00:04:00,173\r\nAnd I, we looked at some of those, \r\nsmall colleges\r\n\r\n76\r\n00:04:00,773 --> 00:04:03,910\r\nwhich realized, there's a reason\r\nwhy I'm not retired, by the way.\r\n\r\n77\r\n00:04:03,977 --> 00:04:06,980\r\nBecause these are not cheap schools.\r\n\r\n78\r\n00:04:07,847 --> 00:04:10,850\r\nBut you then, came to your senses\r\nand got your,\r\n\r\n79\r\n00:04:12,018 --> 00:04:16,889\r\ngraduate degree from, you're an MPA\r\nfrom the University of Washington.\r\n\r\n80\r\n00:04:16,889 --> 00:04:21,160\r\nSo I know you're still a true, Husky at heart.\r\n\r\n81\r\n00:04:21,494 --> 00:04:23,997\r\nI haven't,\r\nI don't know about Swarthmore’s...\r\n\r\n82\r\n00:04:23,997 --> 00:04:26,566\r\nare they in NESCAC or?\r\n\r\n83\r\n00:04:26,566 --> 00:04:27,600\r\nThey... do you know which conference?\r\n\r\n84\r\n00:04:27,600 --> 00:04:30,603\r\nYou don't even know what conference\r\nthey're in.\r\n\r\n85\r\n00:04:32,305 --> 00:04:33,573\r\nBut they didn't make it to the Final Four.\r\n\r\n86\r\n00:04:33,573 --> 00:04:35,508\r\nWe know that much for a\r\n\r\n87\r\n00:04:35,508 --> 00:04:37,110\r\nDivision three school.\r\n\r\n88\r\n00:04:37,110 --> 00:04:38,211\r\nBut as I said earlier.\r\n\r\n89\r\n00:04:38,211 --> 00:04:41,347\r\nYeah, you and I joined the city\r\nfamily back in 2008.\r\n\r\n90\r\n00:04:41,347 --> 00:04:46,819\r\nAnd I will tell you, it's a fun fact\r\nthat when I had, won my election\r\n\r\n91\r\n00:04:47,387 --> 00:04:50,056\r\nand I started thinking\r\nabout the team that I wanted to develop\r\n\r\n92\r\n00:04:51,157 --> 00:04:52,058\r\nand was one of the first\r\n\r\n93\r\n00:04:52,058 --> 00:04:55,628\r\npeople I bumped into,\r\nwhen I called and reached out.\r\n\r\n94\r\n00:04:56,029 --> 00:04:57,997\r\nFun fact\r\nagain, is actually bumped into you.\r\n\r\n95\r\n00:04:57,997 --> 00:05:01,968\r\nRemember when I was in Costco, \r\nCostco shoppers.\r\n\r\n96\r\n00:05:01,968 --> 00:05:04,971\r\nAnd we had a great conversation and,\r\n\r\n97\r\n00:05:04,971 --> 00:05:08,408\r\nI was removed from city politics\r\nfor a short period, and I just\r\n\r\n98\r\n00:05:08,808 --> 00:05:12,111\r\nyou always just impressed me\r\nwith just sort of who you are.\r\n\r\n99\r\n00:05:12,312 --> 00:05:14,747\r\nJoela, I see why you fell in love with him. \r\nI fell in love with this guy, too.\r\n\r\n100\r\n00:05:14,747 --> 00:05:17,984\r\nSo, just how you carry yourself with such\r\n\r\n101\r\n00:05:17,984 --> 00:05:21,187\r\nan analytical thinker, it's easy\r\n\r\n102\r\n00:05:21,187 --> 00:05:24,190\r\nto get emotional about these issues.\r\n\r\n103\r\n00:05:24,857 --> 00:05:25,825\r\nIt is.\r\n\r\n104\r\n00:05:25,825 --> 00:05:27,527\r\nTrust me, it is.\r\n\r\n105\r\n00:05:27,527 --> 00:05:30,296\r\nBut when you push the emotions aside\r\nand just look at trying\r\n\r\n106\r\n00:05:30,296 --> 00:05:33,499\r\nto do the right thing and make smart\r\npolicy decisions, whether it's\r\n\r\n107\r\n00:05:34,200 --> 00:05:37,403\r\ntax policy or reducing expenses\r\n\r\n108\r\n00:05:38,004 --> 00:05:41,074\r\nto push the emotions aside\r\nand just think about it very soberly.\r\n\r\n109\r\n00:05:41,507 --> 00:05:45,378\r\nI think you're the best and\r\nI can learn from you as mayor because I\r\n\r\n110\r\n00:05:46,012 "text": "Thanks for being here.\nI'm really excited,\nDan, to say a few words about you and embarrass you and Joela a little bit.\nThat's always the mayor’s\nprivilege on these exciting days.\nA few things.\nWe all know why we're here.\nTo celebrate the close,\nit was a 5-4 vote for your confirmation.\nNo, it was unanimous.\nAs director of the city budget office during a critical time.\nNot just for our city, but I think in our country.\nI want to thank all of you for taking time out of your busy schedules\nto celebrate.\nYou know, I always say repeatedly,\nyou got to find things to celebrate almost every single day in life.\nAnd clearly, this is one of them.\nJoela, thank you for, being with him.\nProbably leading him, through very tough times that we have.\nAnd so I'll talk a little bit about that.\nFor those that don't know, what our budget office does.\nI don't know all what they do, by the way.\nMy jokes are a little flat this morning.\nThis is funny stuff I'm throwing out here.\nI got to broaden my laughter here a little bit.\nThey balance our books and develop options for the mayor\nand the city council to consider when we are looking at the quality\nof services that people expect and indeed they deserve in our city.\nI think as departments go,\nthey're sort of the, I would say the brain center,\nthe nerve center, and what we could do, we always want more resources.\nAnd you and I, it come into the state around the same time in 2008,\nand I don't recall a time where every department\nand every constituent said more, more, more.\nAnd we understand that, Seattle is a very demanding city and rightfully so.\nWe're a phenomenal city.\nSo your office looks at how we can sort of navigate\nthrough all of these challenges and indeed in an area where in a time\nwhere cuts in front of funding, they're targeting vital programs\nto, to our services that meet in clearly many of our most vulnerable neighbors.\nYour work and the work of your colleagues here.\nAnd I see many of the CBO here.\nI'm very happy that you are here.\nYour work becomes incredibly important.\nI think more so now than ever before, at least in my professional life.\nSo, thank you.\nI am not talking to you, Dan,\ntalking about all the people that have come here to support you.\nI've learned, many years ago that\nsuccess is not a\none person's journey.\nYou can't have success without a team,\nand you have a very successful team\ndoing outstanding work.\nYou know, I,\nwhen I'm around people, I always say\ntry to lead with integrity.\nLead with your values.\nLead with who you are.\nAnd I'm very pleased with the level of competency\nand the level of integrity coming out of your office.\nThese are tough jobs we have, we sign up for.\nWe did, it was a blue pill and a red pill.\nI don't know what pills in the matrix.\nThis was the pill you took.\nBut the pill we all took is to serve this public and servant with\nintegrity and a commitment to a people outside of ourselves.\nSo thank you, Dan. A little bit about Dan's background.\nHe went to Swarthmore College.\nMany of you know, that's one of the top liberals\narts colleges in the country, at least in Philadelphia.\nFull, full, full honesty here.\nI didn't know what, who\nor what Swarthmore was until my son started looking at colleges.\nAnd I, we looked at some of those, small colleges\nwhich realized, there's a reason why I'm not retired, by the way.\nBecause these are not cheap schools.\nBut you then, came to your senses and got your,\ngraduate degree from, you're an MPA from the University of Washington.\nSo I know you're still a true, Husky at heart.\nI haven't, I don't know about Swarthmore’s...\nare they in NESCAC or?\nThey... do you know which conference?\nYou don't even know what conference they're in.\nBut they didn't make it to the Final Four.\nWe know that much for a\nDivision three school.\nBut as I said earlier.\nYeah, you and I joined the city family back in 2008.\nAnd I will tell you, it's a fun fact that when I had, won my election\nand I started thinking about the team that I wanted to develop\nand was one of the first\npeople I bumped into, when I called and reached out.\nFun fact again, is actually bumped into you.\nRemember when I was in Costco, Costco shoppers.\nAnd we had a great conversation and,\nI was removed from city politics for a short period, and I just\nyou always just impressed me with just sort of who you are.\nJoela, I see why you fell in love with him. I fell in love with this guy, too.\nSo, just how you carry yourself with such\nan analytical thinker, it's easy\nto get emotional about these issues.\nIt is.\nTrust me, it is.\nBut when you push the emotions aside and just look at trying\nto do the right thing and make smart policy decisions, whether it's\ntax policy or reducing expenses\nto push the emotions aside and just think about it very soberly.\nI think you're the best and I can learn from you as mayor because I\nwhen we worked together on this city council, you always impressed\nupon me and how you were able to logically do that.\nPlus, you used to always do this thing\nwhere you could twist the pen around, something that. That was always impressive to.\nAnd personally, we know you're an avid tennis player.\nI've heard about you like to play doubles a lot.\nI think that's\nbecause maybe you get lazy to want to run into the other side of the court.\nBut I really like the fact that you have that good sort of work life balance.\nI think that's something we all can learn from.\nAs I tell my colleagues, you can easily burn out in these jobs that we have.\nSo we have to find that collaboration.\nAnd I think you model that.\nSo having said all that, in closing, I'll say this,\nyou really epitomize the One Seattle spirit.\nWe put a lot of pressure on you and your team.\nPressure, because we're trying to do the right thing.\nWe want to house people.\nWe want to treat sick people.\nWe want everyone to be able to live in this city.\nWe want to fight against climate change.\nWe want our young people\nto have great educations and be able to optimize their life.\nEveryone in here is at certain impediments to their progress\nand some policymaker decide, let's try to help you.\nIncredible pressure in a city that's growing as rapidly as Seattle.\nSo you epitomize the One Seattle spirit of humility,\ncompetency, excellence, and a darn good athlete too.\nGot to stick that in.\nI always tell people, people think about athletics,\nathletics as something you do physically.\nYou know, I said chess is an athletic game.\nSometimes walking in a park holding someone's hands to me is athletic gesture.\nI always say for me, sports is not so much competing against someone.\nIt's just taking whatever\ntools you have, trying to exercise them\nand excel in a way that self optimizes.\nBreathing can be a sport too.\nBreathe well and we are breathing happily because the council...\nI see a few council members here, I thought I saw...\nIs there any council members here?\nWhere's?\nOh, Dan Strauss. Yeah. Okay.\nAll right.\nOne of nine.\nAll right.\nThank you for being here.\nCouncilmember Strauss, thank you for being here.\nMeans a lot to all of us.\nAnd with that, let's proceed with the, the pinning piece.\nI believe you.\nI think I've done this dozens times.\nLet's do it. And I think. Joela, are you going to do the honors?\nWe're going to have our city clerk come forward.\nOkay.\nLet me get out of the way.\nReady? Ready. Okay, will you repeat after me?\nPlease raise your right hand.\nI, Daniel Paul Eder,\nI, Daniel Paul Eder,\naffirm that I possess,\naffirm that I possess,\nall of the qualifications prescribed in the Seattle City charter,\nall of the qualifications prescribed in the Seattle City Charter\nand the Seattle Municipal Code, and the Seattle municipal code\nfor the position of director of the city budget\nfor the position of the director of the City Budget Office.\nThat I will support the Constitution of the United States.\nThat I will support the Constitution of the United States.\nThe Constitution of the State of Washington, the Constitution of the State\nof Washington, and the Charter and Ordinances of the City of Seattle,\nand the Charter and Ordinances of the City of Seattle.\nAnd that I will faithfully conduct myself,\nand that I will faithfully conduct myself as the director\nof the city budget office, as the director of the city budget office.\nCongratulations.\nGreat.\n[clapping]\nCongratulations\nThank you.\nOh, so many people here.\nThank you for being here.\nFirst and foremost, I'm glad to have the opportunity\nto make a few, brief remarks.\nThat's so nice to see all of you here today.\nI'm overwhelmed.\nI want to start by saying thank you to Mayor Harrell,\nfor elevating me to the role of budget director.\nWe've worked together for many years.\nAnd I deeply appreciate your trust in me.\nIt's been an honor to support you as you lead Seattle towards a sustainable\nfinancial future, and I look forward to continuing to do so in this role.\nI look forward to continuing to help you serve\nSeattle residents.\nI know that, many of the council members,\nat least half are in the committee right now and can't be with us.\nJust timing worked out that way, but, so pleased that,\nCouncilmember Strauss, the chair of the Select budget committee,\nfinance and Native\nCommunities committee, can, was able to be here today.\nThank you.\nI look forward to continuing to work with you, and your colleagues,\nas we ensure that you have the information that you need to make final decisions.\nAs we, consider difficult choices about how to spend the city's resources.\nThank you to my incredibly hard\nworking colleagues in the city budget office.\nI deeply appreciate the work that you do.\nYour support, your smarts.\nWhen I began working as the interim budget director,\nabout a year ago, you were all so supportive and,\nmore welcoming, and I just really appreciate it.\nI've been continuously impressed by your deep knowledge.\nYou were technical chops and understanding of historical context.\nEven more notable is your passion to make the city a better place for all of us.\nThank you as well to\nall of the leaders and workers of the city.\nI'm proud to count many of you as my long\nterm colleagues and my close friends.\nI'm honored to work with you, and I'm grateful that so many of you,\nso many of you, are here, and able to carve out time from your busy\ncalendars to be here with me today.\nAnd certainly not least, I want to thank my family,\nmy wife, Joela, who is here today in the front row.\nOur three daughters are all away having their own adventures.\nToo far away to be here today.\nI rely on my family's love and support every day in order\nto be able to tackle this challenging, professional role.\nI know that the long hours and overlapping crises\nand the occasional tennis match outside of work hours\nhave meant that I've\nsometimes not been there for family time.\nThank you for your understanding and support\nand for covering for me for so many years.\nI love you Joe.\nYears ago,\nwhen I was doing, budget work on the City Council as policy staff,\nI tried to explain my job to my then young daughters.\nThey're now all grown women. At the time,\nI remember telling them that my job was to help the city leaders make choices\nabout which new, good things we should invest in,\nmore library hours or investments\nin more soccer fields, maintaining a bridge\nor replacing a roof on a community center, and similar difficult choices.\nWe know that the city's been grappling\nwith revenue shortfalls and federal funding rollbacks,\nwhich mean that business as usual is simply no longer practical.\nUnder the mayor's leadership,\nwe're still trying new approaches and making new investments,\nbut we're also spending a lot of energy finding ways to live within our means\nand explore innovative ways to deliver critical municipal\nservices.\nAnd yes, this also means that we're considering options\nfor some new revenues to help pay for those services.\nI'm confident that together will strike the right balance,\nand CBO will be there to support the mayor\nand the city council's decision making about the path forward.\nIn brief, I'm thrilled for the opportunity to continue working for our great city\nand to help everyone who lives, works, and visits here.\nIn the months and years ahead,\nI look forward to working with you all, as the city makes decisions\nabout how to prioritize and align our resources\nwith a common goal of making Seattle an even better version of itself.\nThank you again for being here with me.\nI hope you'll enjoy a cookie or two in the back and just thank you again.\n[clapping]",

"text": "Thanks for being here.\nI'm really excited,\nDan, to say a few words about you and embarrass you and Joela a little bit.\nThat's always the mayor’s\nprivilege on these exciting days.\nA few things.\nWe all know why we're here.\nTo celebrate the close,\nit was a 5-4 vote for your confirmation.\nNo, it was unanimous.\nAs director of the city budget office during a critical time.\nNot just for our city, but I think in our country.\nI want to thank all of you for taking time out of your busy schedules\nto celebrate.\nYou know, I always say repeatedly,\nyou got to find things to celebrate almost every single day in life.\nAnd clearly, this is one of them.\nJoela, thank you for, being with him.\nProbably leading him, through very tough times that we have.\nAnd so I'll talk a little bit about that.\nFor those that don't know, what our budget office does.\nI don't know all what they do, by the way.\nMy jokes are a little flat this morning.\nThis is funny stuff I'm throwing out here.\nI got to broaden my laughter here a little bit.\nThey balance our books and develop options for the mayor\nand the city council to consider when we are looking at the quality\nof services that people expect and indeed they deserve in our city.\nI think as departments go,\nthey're sort of the, I would say the brain center,\nthe nerve center, and what we could do, we always want more resources.\nAnd you and I, it come into the state around the same time in 2008,\nand I don't recall a time where every department\nand every constituent said more, more, more.\nAnd we understand that, Seattle is a very demanding city and rightfully so.\nWe're a phenomenal city.\nSo your office looks at how we can sort of navigate\nthrough all of these challenges and indeed in an area where in a time\nwhere cuts in front of funding, they're targeting vital programs\nto, to our services that meet in clearly many of our most vulnerable neighbors.\nYour work and the work of your colleagues here.\nAnd I see many of the CBO here.\nI'm very happy that you are here.\nYour work becomes incredibly important.\nI think more so now than ever before, at least in my professional life.\nSo, thank you.\nI am not talking to you, Dan,\ntalking about all the people that have come here to support you.\nI've learned, many years ago that\nsuccess is not a\none person's journey.\nYou can't have success without a team,\nand you have a very successful team\ndoing outstanding work.\nYou know, I,\nwhen I'm around people, I always say\ntry to lead with integrity.\nLead with your values.\nLead with who you are.\nAnd I'm very pleased with the level of competency\nand the level of integrity coming out of your office.\nThese are tough jobs we have, we sign up for.\nWe did, it was a blue pill and a red pill.\nI don't know what pills in the matrix.\nThis was the pill you took.\nBut the pill we all took is to serve this public and servant with\nintegrity and a commitment to a people outside of ourselves.\nSo thank you, Dan. Ready.
